What You Missed In This Month's Workshop
Baston
We had a good workshop yesterday. Before Manong Rich got there we worked on some sumbrada. We started out in largo and after a few minutes moved in to start adding in checks. After a few minutes of that Manong arrived and we bowed in.
We started the workshop with some light/slow sparring from largo distance so that we could practice evading and looking for targets from that range. So for example the person who initiates the first strike (feeder) goes for say angle 1, the receiver will evade and counter by attacking the nearest target they see available. It could be the weapon hand, it would be the live hand, or maybe its the leg. From there the feeder will counter attack and go for their nearest target right away. Sounds easy right? Maybe not right off the bat. Since we are going slow we have to time our strikes differently so that they land. It also shows what can be done to counter certain attacks.

Refinement
Refinement
Today's practice seemed to be themed around refinement. Taking a look at what we have learned, picking at a few things, clearing things up here and there that we might not be sure of, and then cleaning things up over repetition. If something looks sloppy, let's slow it down until we get it smooth. Sometimes we get a little excited and go a little fast. HEEEEeeeEEEEYYYYYy....... lol.To read the full story, follow the link below:

What You Missed In This Past Workshop

What You Missed In This Past Workshop
Knife Template
This workshop focused on knife template, sumbrada, and punyo entries. We started with knife template. Manong went a little over certain application aspects of the knife template such as “Out of site, Out of mind” techniques by hiding the blade inline with the body. This helps takes the focus off the blade for a short moment, and puts the focus on the other hand allowing more stealth like techniques. Along with that he briefly talked about covering spray (from blood) from certain cuts.Sumbrada and Punyo Entries
From there we went into sumbrada. Specifically Super Sumbrada. After going over the basics of the drill he showed us how to throw in the punyo. This adds an extra beat and at the same time shows you how you can move into punyo mano from the drill. To go along with that we went into Punyo Mano entries after. He showed us three entries: high, low, and the percussion. We ran out of time so we ended training there.Closing
It was another great workshop. Thanks to Manong Rich Verdejo and family for coming down to share some more knowledge with us, to both Bernie and Manong who lead the workshop, and to all who attended. We had a couple of faces come that we haven’t seen in a while so it was nice to have them back to train with the group and Manong Rich. Next seminar with James Urban is coming up! We hope to see you there! Well that’s it for now. Happy Training everyone! ItsYoBoyFlex and I’m out.Tuesday, October 14, 2014

Learning The New Curriculum
64 Solo Baston Form
This Sunday we started going over the material from the new FCS Kali Level 3 Curriculum. We began with the 64 Solo Baston Form. Most of us already knew 1-36 so we briefly went through it to make sure that we were all on the same page and then moved on from 37-64. The way it was broken down made it easy to remember, being 7, 7, 10, 4. Each count section focused on a specific type of attack. The movements made more sense when we put it into application....Click on the link below to read the full story.

Kali In The Morning PIFA In The Afternoon
What You Missed This Sunday
Baston
So here’s what you missed this past Sunday. We started with some stick drills to warm up. A couple of things we tried were to do push ups while holding yourself up on sticks. We tried holding from the top as well as gripping toward the bottom. It’s a lot harder than it sounds and looks. It requires a lot of balance and grip strength. The balance and grip strength needed to do the push up made it about 2-3 times harder if not more. Some of us couldn’t even do one and we all do push ups all the time.We also tried a drill where we all formed a circle and had to do 4 Count with each person beside you at the same time. The idea was fighting two people on either side of you at the same time. Confusing at first, but then we got the hang of it pretty quickly.

Great To See Both Old And New Faces
http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/09/15/great-see-old-new-faces/
So yesterday was our Monthly Workshop with Manong Rich Verdejo. The agenda was to go over some updated material from Level 1-3 curriculum.
Stick Work
First up was stick work. Before Manong Rich came down we started warming up. Doing stretches, cardio exercises, and stick drills to warm up the wrists. Then we moved on to 4 count drills. From single stick to double stick, right and left, alternating and mixing it up, it was all to get the body warmed up and get the mind going. From there we started doing Punyo Entries and then Manong arrived, which was perfect because he was going to go over Punyo Entries from the new curriculum. This was great because now that I’m working on my level 3 material, I would get to see what’s new right off the bat. Manong Rich showed us Punyo Entries 1-5 on both right and left. Some of the changes were minor, as far as curriculum is concerned, and others were almost totally changed.
Knife tapping
From there we went into knife tapping. So a common drill in FMA is that the feeder will have a knife and the receiver won’t. The feeder goes for angle 1 and then angle 2. During that time the receiver will parry said knife attack angles. So where is the issue with this? From what I see is that the receiver doesn’t learn much past sensitivity and “Oh shit there is a knife coming at me. Let me get it out of the way.” So there is no counter, there is no offense, just defense. It’s just that, a sensitivity drill.During this time there is a lot of opportunity on both sides, but the sensitivity drill mostly teaches opportunity from the feeder perspective. The feeder learns at what point they can be successful, or simply keep attempting and eventually one will get in. Now have the receiver throw in a strike or deploy a knife after the parry and the game changes. This starts to open up your mind to possibilities. So I might throw say a back fist after angle 2. The feeder has to respond to my “feed”, in turn changing his or her role to the receiver even if just for a moment.
After that we went into Super Sumbrada using knife instead of stick. This continued the idea of exchanging roles because the concept is “I feed, you feed.”
Concept
In a real fight, exchanges usually happen more frequently, meaning, the other doesn’t always wait for you to finish what you are doing. They take the opportunity when it presents itself. The new material seems to apply this concept by inserting it into the curriculum sooner than later. Then as you see the practitioner progressing you can add more pressure, speed, and different types of attacks.I think this way of training is more realistic than hey let me teach you a combination, and then let me teach you how to defend against that combination. Watch a lot of sparring and fight videos and see what I mean. Unless the person goes into a straight defensive mode where they are just covering, usually the fighters only pull off 1-3 hit combinations at a time before they either back off or the opponent counters. Well, unless of course both fighters are just non-stop swinging at each other.
Lets get some food
After training the group went accross the street to grab some lunch and had a few laughs. We talked more about things from the Florida Gathering as well as concepts of MOTAC, and things FCS Kali West Coast related.
On a personal note, I also noticed that things seemed to make more sense and are easier to pick up now that I have a better understanding of the basics. Things are clicking much faster. Oh and did I mention that I received my Level Two Certificate of Rank? A step closer in getting my instructorship!
Closing
So to wrap things up, today was a good day. We had a good size group. (Not everyone was in the photo because some had to leave early.) It was really good to see everyone though. Both old and new faces showed up to partake in our monthly workshop with Manong Rich and we got to see some of the changes from the new curriculum. I hope to see more of the original members as well as the new more frequently so we can continue to grow our tribe. Till next time happy training everybody! Monthly Workshop With Manong Rich And More
Monthly Workshop

He will be going over a lot of new things from the Florida Gathering, which I will touch up on a little bit later, some things from the new curriculum, and who knows what else! lol. It's always a surprise as to what he teaches when he comes down. It's a good time and we learn new things so come out and join us if you're free!Date: Sunday, September 14, 2014

FCS Kali Florida Gathering
Now as many of you know, the Florida FCS gathering just past. Many have been posting up pictures, videos, and their experiences. Our most senior group leader, Bernie Herrera, was able to attend and represent FCS Kali West Coast San Diego along with Manong Rich and his family. Needless to say, FCS Cali Crew was in the house! lol.I wish I could have been there because many new things were shown including MOTAC, and the new curriculum. I also enjoyed the videos of little Richie attacking everyone, and the Carenza Testing.
Two things that Bernie wanted to share from the gathering were the use of elbows as well as footwork and stances.
Elbows
For the use of elbows, we learned this through our Mano Mano Template, but he stressed how it should be used more often. By keeping things in tight, the elbows can be kept down as means of cover for the rib area. They can also be brought up toward the side of the head as use of cover for the head and neck areas, while being used as a destruction at the same time, which also sets us up for follow ups. Ed demonstrated how effective it was by allowing one of our strongest members, Marlon, to throw a right hook at his face and he simply covered by bringing the elbow up, with his hand grasping the back his head allowing the rest of his forearm to cover the temple and ear. The bicep gave some cover to the carotid and the elbow was at a position of striking. They explained how at any moment there is a time of exposure, the elbow can be used as cover and or striking as well as palusot, depending on distance and timing.
Footwork And Stances
Bernie explained how the use of footwork and stances can easily change a situation. One example was when someone is put in a center wrist lock. If in a normal stance, like simply standing up, the wrist lock can drop a grown man to his knees, but if he were to get in a cat stance, the pain is reduced. He demonstrated this on me and it did lessen the pain. I felt like a had more of an opportunity to break from the lock because the pain was tolerable.
And I'm sure that most of know that certain stances are strong from one angle and weak from another. This flows hand and hand or foot and foot, with our footwork. Having a strong base is very important and your most lower body part will set that in play. Usually, it's your feet that is the root of your base. Foot placement. Your footwork sets you up to move out of harms way, to move in to engage, or move out to disengage, and to keep ones balance. So if your feet aren't in good placement, your base can be thrown off.
Closing
So for the past couple of weeks our practices have been themed around things learned from the gathering on top of curriculum and I'm sure Manong will be sharing more as well when he comes down. Also, Tuhon Ray Dionaldo's birthday was celebrated during the gathering as well so from the entire West Coast family, happy belated birthday and thank you for the knowledge and support! Ok baby is being demanding right now so gotta go. Haha. Happy training everyone! ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.

Embracing Change
...On Sunday Bernie had us working on transitions and counters. After warming up with some stick drills we went into Punyo Entries. Usually it would start from a 4 Count, one would feed in, complete the drill, break out, and then back into 4 count. This time he had us go in with an entry and then transition to another entry. This kept the drill going, forcing the receiver to constantly react to the attack. At the same time, the receiver could at the right time, become the feeder by beating the other to the punch on the entry....

Weekend Recap - 07/04/14-07/06/14
Friday:
It was crazy on the 4th. When we got to Crown Point, the parking lot was already full and there was hardly any space available to practice except for the areas where the kiddo wouldn't have anything to do. So we decided to move practice to Windansea Beach. We got there about 30 minutes before everyone started to crowd the beach so we were able to get a good spot and setup. Rubbed on some sunscreen and got started.
I warmed up with my usual footwork with defenses. From there I practiced Sinawali. First with sticks, then with bolos. After that I went to my single stick drills from 1-36 stick form, 4 walls, 4 count, sumbrada, and air disarms. Then I went to single bolo. Played around with some Carenza using single stick, double sticks, double bolos, and single bolos......

We spinnin'!
Sunday was Father’s Day and Ed took time away from his family to come teach us. So before I start I’d like to thank everyone from the FCS Tribe, FCS Cali Crew, and FCS Kali San Diego for taking time to share their knowledge with us. I’d also like to thank everyone who came to Sunday’s practice who took time away from their families to train with their FCS family.
Warm up.
Ed brought some kicking pads that day. He was going to go over some kicks from his Taekwondo background and show how we can apply it to real world scenarios and how we can integrate Taekwondo and Hapkido into FCS. Before any of that we did our warm up. We started out with some stretching and then went up and down the hills using different footing like forward, backward, and side stepping. Then we did some footwork drills. These drills were to help get our footing ready for the Taekwondo kicks that we were going to be doing….Click on the link below to read the full story.

Beach Day - 061414
http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/06/14/beach-day-061414/
Man it was such a nice day at the beach today. Wish we didn't have so much to do so we could have stayed longer. I pretty much did all of the same stuff I did from yesterday, other than showing Tracee the karambit template that Bernie started teaching us last Sunday. Practice makes perfect right? Still have a lot to do today so I have to cut this really short. Tomorrow is Father's Day so I'll see whoever can make it to practice. Happy training everyone and see you next time. ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.

Weekend Recap
ItsYoBoyFlex Weekend Recap
Friday:
We made our way to Crown Point and I got started. I was feeling tired that day. Not enough sleep from the night before and was starting to feel a little under the weather. I also started running again. I didn't want to be too sore for Saturday so I didn't run a few days. Anyway, I took it easy that day and went over mostly stick work.

Kajukenbo Unity Seminar
This was the first time for me to attend. Manong Rich, Jim, Edwin, Marlon, and I were there to represent FCS Kali, FCS Cali Crew, and of course FCS Kali West Coast San Diego. We got to learn, hear some great stories, and see some awesome presentations from some great masters of our time including Prof. Brad Namahoe, Guro Mario Gajo, GM Chris P. Siangco, 'Ôlohe Kolomona Solomon Kaihewalu, GM Eugene Sedeno, GM Ted Sotelo, and GGM Carlos Bunda to name a few. They even had Mercito "No Mercy" Gesta and his father, Anecito Gesta, come to do a presentation as well as have us do some drills. And did I mention that Manong Rich also did a presentation representing FCS Kali and Ed Parker's Kenpo? I'll try to briefly share what I experienced there because even this will be a lot to take in.Click the link below to read the whole story:

Whatcha Missed – Lock Stock And Two Smokin’ Barrels
Ok so here’s whatcha missed this weekend:
Friday Out With The Kids… They Ain’t My Kids.
Friday. On Friday we headed over to our usual spot at Crown Point. It must have been a Senior day at the park or something because right when we pulled into the parking lot, so did 3 buses full of students. Needless to say, the park was packed full of kids. A great opportunity for these kids to see some Kali action....http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/06/01/whatcha-missed-lock-stock-two-smokin-barrels/

Catchin Up
http://www.fcscalicrew.com/2014/05/29/catching-up/
Ok here's what happened in the last week or two:
First off I've been working on the new FCS Cali Crew website. If you haven't check it out yet, swing on over, browse around, and let us know what you think. I will also be posting my FCS Kali related blogs on this site as well anything else that is FCS Cali Crew related including news and events.
Second, though I missed practice last Saturday and Sunday due to family coming down from the Bay Area for Memorial Weekend, I did practice on Friday with James. He missed last Sunday's practice so we basically went over everything that Manong Rich showed us when he came down to San Diego. So Friday's practice had a focus on Cinco Teros and Sarong/Malong.
Since James already had the concepts down for Cinco Teros I basically showed him the combinations that we worked on. From there we took turns going over the drills that were shown to us on Sunday. No stick breaking this time though. lol. James was having a little trouble on the outside redondo so I showed him how practicing with one of my bolo trainers helped with my hand/wrist positioning, but in the end it was simply a matter of practice, practice, practice because though similar, hitting with a stick vs a blade has it's differences. That said we messed around working with bolos after.
Finally we went over Sarong/Malong. I showed him the two techniques that we went over. My Sarong is shorter than some so we had to make adjustments in positioning to make it work without strangling each other to death. The Wifey and I really like working with Sarong/Malong and we're looking forward to learning more techniques.
Third, on Saturday June 7th we will be attending the Kajukenbo Seminar being held at:
Place:
10440 Black Mountain Road
San Diego, CA 92126
Time:
9:30am-3:30pm
Contact:
Sigung Phil Dang
Kajukenbofight22@hotmail.com

Price:
$40 Pre Registration
$50 at the door
Well that's it for now. We have more things coming up so keep posted on this site. Thanks for reading, happy training, and see you next time. ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.

What happened over the weekend
http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/05/19/happened-weekend/
After having a really hot week packed with fires through out the county, the weather was great this weekend. During the week it was so hot that I hardly practiced. I picked up the training bolos once in a while, but didn't do too much due to the heat. On Friday we headed out to our usual destination, Crown Point. I practiced by myself under a tree in the shade while the Wifey and kiddo played in the water and playground under the sun.
I went over all of the material that I know from curriculum. As usual I start off with my warm up. Then I move on to double sticks to single stick. Then I go from single blade to double blade, and finally to empty hand. Double blades isn't part of my curriculum yet, but I've been doing it along with my training so that when it does come I'll be a little more comfortable with it (holding blades in both hands). So I practice both forward and reverse grip double knife work off tapping and guntings.
On
Saturday we hit the beach. The Wifey warmed up and did a little stick
work with me. After that I turned on some Carenza music and went through
all of the material. I did a lot of Carenza and Cinco Tero work that
day as well. Trying to prepare for when Manong came down on Sunday in
which Cinco Teros was part of the agenda. After a couple of hours of
practicing, playing in the sun with the kiddo, and having snacks,
Osairis fell asleep in Mama's arms so we packed up and headed home.
Sunday came and we were running late. When we got there Manong was going through the strikes for the Cinco Teros. I accidentally tagged Tracee twice with my stick. Once on the arm and another on her thumb as my stick glided down hers on the strike. SORRY BABE!!! lol. It's ok though. In the middle of all the stick work I eventually got tagged in the eye by her stick. Haha. But man I was really feeling the Cinco Tero drills. Tracee and I even broke one of the sticks we used during the drills and the guys demolished on of the thicker sticks as well. Drew and Manong demonstrated more stick drills and then after doing that for a while we went on to Sarong/Malong.
It seemed like it was a Sarong/Malong day for the
FCS tribe because other groups were doing Sarong/Malong work too! I've
been wanting to learn this for a long time. I've had one for a while
now, but just never had anyone show it to me in person. All I had were
videos so I was pretty juiced to learn this stuff. I like how it takes
little effort to create so much torq. Bernie demonstrated on me so I
learned just how tight things could get. He also explained how the
techniques are great for women who carry bags with long straps or say a
duffle or laptop bag with a shoulder strap. Really cool stuff. Everyone
was getting tied up and choked out.
Throughout practice Richie would sneak attack us with either sticks or aluminium training hawks. lol. That kid is going to be breaking sticks in no time. I love the tornado strike he does. Everybody gets hit! Ha ha. Good times! Wish more could have made it out. Well that's what all happened this weekend. See everyone soon and happy trainings. ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.

My First Students
http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/05/11/first-students/
I haven't been doing much extra fun stuff other than trying to mess around with the karambit and playing with Osairis. Just pretty much following the curriculum so that I can get ready for my Level 2. I know recently I haven't been going into much detail about my training, but it was just getting a little too redundant for me to keep writing the same things over and over. So I won't bore you with the same stuff, but what I did do differently these last couple of days is try to go over some knife disarms that I learned from my curriculum video.
The disarms are done from the Pikal grip. Some may know it as the reverse grip or ice pick grip. They are done from Hubad. One of the disarms would hook the knife hand and destruct or hyper extend the elbo which would assist in the knife strip for the disarm. The other disarm would basically snake the knife hand causing the strip, but I need more direction to make sure I'm actually doing this one properly.
Since I was right already working on stick work I showed her 1-6 of the 12 basic strikes. She told me that she was 55 years old so she needs to go slow, one thing at a time so that she could learn it easier. "One hand first, then I learn the other. Two hands same time too much." So I had her put her left hand behind her back as we went through strikes one and two. I had her incorporate some footwork right off the bat so that she would not get tangled up later. I explained the main target areas for each strike as we went on and also explained the "X" pattern when following through with these strikes. She immediately picked up on the "figure 8" pattern.
We finally got up to strike 6 in which we started to incorporate the left hand. I explained briefly that we consider the left hand in this drill the live hand, that this is where the real danger lies because most will focus too much on the weapon hand which may leave them open for an attack. I like how she saw deep meaning in every movement that I showed her. So when I showed her the parrying motion that I do with the live hand she also interpreted that as washing away the evil spirits. She literally found symbolism in everything we did. You really do learn more from the people you teach. After that I showed her our formal salute. I explained the meaning and significance of the salute and with each movement. In the middle she needed to take a quick breather so I ended our little lesson there because I didn't want to get her too tired and she still had to walk home.
After she asks how often do I come here and when and where do I usually teach? So I told her that I train on Fridays at Crown Point and here at Windansea Beach on Saturdays at 9:30am and that our official group practice is at Heritage Park on Sundays. She doesn't drive so she can't make it to the official practices, but she lives close by and Saturdays works best for her so she wants to come learn on Saturdays. So the Saturday practices at the beach just might get a little bigger by +1.
I finished up my training with knife work.
So these last couple of days have been pretty awesome. The Wifey and I also locked in a spot for our son's 2nd birthday party on June 21st at Tecolote Shores Park South from 11am-6pm. All FCS members are welcome! Bring the kiddos too! Well that's it for this weekend. Tomorrow is Mother's Day so no practice. Till next time, happy training. ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.

Friday
So my son, Osairis, is starting to copy me more and more. Its pretty awesome. He knows that when I pull out a stick or trainer that it's time to practice in which he usually asks for one to play with too. He can even wave around my bigger sticks which are heavier than our standard sticks that we practice with. Hopefully soon he will actually start picking up the moves that he sees me doing. Reminds me of when I first started teaching my daughter how to defend herself. She eventually lost interest, but I'm hoping that if or when the time comes she will retain and use what I taught her.

Saturday
On Saturday I headed out to the beach alone to practice. The Wifey and kiddo were at home making vegan ice cream! Anyway, I was going through all of my stick work and toward the end a woman comes up to me and asks what I was doing. "Kali" I told her. She asks, "Do you teach? Can you teach me?" I happily responded "Sure!" She tried to give me money to pay so I could teach her in which I refused the money. I told her I would teach her for free.
Since I was right already working on stick work I showed her 1-6 of the 12 basic strikes. She told me that she was 55 years old so she needs to go slow, one thing at a time so that she could learn it easier. "One hand first, then I learn the other. Two hands same time too much." Practice, practice, practice
http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/05/08/practice-practice-practice/
So for the last few days I've been practicing at home. I've been going over all of the Level 2 material that I know so far. The goal is to do it enough so that it all becomes muscle memory and flows smoothly. Still got a bit more practicing to do till I get there, but I'm getting closer. I've also been going over some photos and videos from our practices and I'm nit picking where I see mistakes. It hit me the other day when I wrote my last blog, going through what photos to use, and noticed my live hand was down when it shouldn't have been. So for that brief moment my guard was down so I was open. Bad practice habits turn into real bad habits so I need to work them out.
Tomorrow is going to be a videos kind of day. To go over my Level 2 DVD and try to learn what I don't have down yet. Trying to get my Level 2 folks! Oh and we ordered some new training gear a few weeks back which should be coming in within the next week or so. Excited! Well that's it for today. Just want to keep you guys updated with where I'm at. Till next time, happy training! ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.

Things you missed over the weekend
http://www.itsyoboyflex.com/2014/05/06/things-missed-weekend/
Saturday was a great day to be at the beach. Nice clear sunny weather, lots of people, and ocean water to cool down in. The Wifey and I warmed up with some stick work and then went over her Level 1 knife tapping. In addition to this I also messed around with karambit and did a little Sinawali. After that we just had a family fun day in the sun.
On Sunday Bernie started us out with defenses and counters with single stick. So we would go over our 4 Walls defenses and follow up each block with 1-3 strikes. We practiced with the different ranges as well. Then we did 4 walls followed up with disarm, and finally 4 walls followed up with disarm and then 1-3 strikes.
Next we went over knife on knife tapping. So first we started out with the basic knife tapping only both participants held a knife. Then we continued the drill, but applying a cut per tap. From there we did the same drill with a minimum of 3 cuts. Finally doing the drill with finishing moves where the cuts could kill the opponent. We would rotate partners so everyone would be able to work with everyone and that way you could get a feel of how the drill feels against different body types.
Then we went over Knife Template. This went along with the theme of defense and counters. Again we continued to rotate partners.
After we went over defensive hubad from empty hand strikes. So your partner can throw a punch or kick and then you would do hubad against it. From there we did the same drill, but followed up with counters.
Finally we went over Cincoteros. This particular drill we went over had both defenses and offenses and multiple partners so Bernie started off with showing parts A, B, and C. Then we would get into groups of 3 or 4 and start the drill. The two outer partners would do parts B, and C, while the center partner would do part A. The partner standing in the middle, part A, would start the drill and when they are done with the sequence they would follow up with a punyo entry and throw in one of the out partners in which the rolls would switch. So the person getting thrown in the middle would do part A and then the person coming out would take that person's role. This way everyone gets a chance at playing all 3 roles and it would continue until we were told to stop.
So it was a lot of fun this weekend, not to mention that Sunday was Star Wars Day, and yesterday was Cinco de Mayo. So does that make today Revenge of the 6th? lol. Anyway, till next time, happy trainings. ItsYoBoyFlex and I'm out.
